The Naysayers Had A Point

[반복표현]:1)현대 영어 표현의 특징은 대체 표현, 생략 표현이 많고 무엇보다도 강조를 위한 반복표현이 많다는 것입니다. 2) 위 패러그래프를 구성하는 문장에 번호를 붙였는데 (문장1)=(문장2)=(문장3)=(문장4)라는 걸 알아야 합니다. 3)그리고 각 문장은 구글의 기업 공개에 불리한 여러 상황과 여론들입니다.


[반복표현의 의미]:1)내가 반복표현이라고 말한다고 해서 “전혀 같은 말을 반복하는” 것으로 오해해서는 안됩니다. 그런 일은 있을 수 없죠. 만약 그런 일이 일어난다면 그건 낭비죠. 자원낭비, 인력 낭비, 시간낭비죠. 똑같은 게 아니라 “거의 비슷한” 또는 “같은 취지의” 말을 반복하는 것을 의미하는 것입니다. 어느 의미에서는 우리들 인생도 “거대한 반복표현 구조”인지도 모릅니다. 2)“영어는 반복 표현 구조”라고 말하는 경우 그렇게 씌어져야 의미를 가장 정확하게 강조 표현할 수 있기 때문입니다.


[to hand Google a long overdue comeuppance]:1)역자는 이 부분을 “큰 곤란에 빠지게 될 것” 운운했는데 오역입니다. 2)“구글이 때늦은 응보를 당하다” 정도가 바른 번역입니다. 2)여기에서 comeuppance는 우리말의 “인과응보”에 해당하는 영어 표현으로서 retribution이 동의어입니다. 3) 인과응보 또는 보복이라고 하는 경우는 물론 구글의 거만에 대해서 미국의 재계, 특히 월스트리트가 보복한다는 말입니다.


[둘째 문장이 오역]:1)둘째 문장이 오역입니다. 2)오역을 가져 온 원인들은 여러 곳에 있지만 가장 큰 원인은 연결사 (connective)의 의미부터 틀려있기 때문에 오역이 비롯되었습니다. 연결사는 분명히 And (그리고)라고 하고 있지 않나요? 연결사 and는 유사한 의미의 표현이 반복되는 경우에 쓰이는 것입니다.


[the naysayers had a poin]:1)역자는 이 진술을 “이런 추측에 대한 반론도 만만치 않았다.”라고 옮기고 있으나 전혀 아니죠. 물론 오역입니다. 2)우선 바른 번역을 제시한다면 “이런 부정적인 견해를 가진 사람들의 생각에도 일리가 있었다”입니다. naysayers란 회의적인 사람들 (skeptics), 의심하는 사람들 (doubters)이죠. 결코 바로 앞의 진술에 이의를 제기하는 자들이 아닌 것입니다. (not dissenters) 3)the naysayers라고 정관사표현을 하고 있지 않나요? 번역가들을 포함한 한국의 영어지도자들 정관사표현의 의미를 제대로 알지 못하고 있는 현실이 정말 안타깝습니다. 정관사표현은 단적으로 기지의 표현을 대체하는 것입니다. 다른 말로 하면, 이미 나온 표현을 다른 간결한 표현으로 축약. 요약하는 표현인 것입니다. (compact summarization, substitution)


[the technology IPO window had been pretty much nailed shut.]:1)역자는 이 부분을 “지난 3년 반 동안 기술업체의 기업공개는 대부분 베일에 가려졌었다는 것이다.”라고 옮기고 있으나 오역입니다. 뭐 “베일에 가려졌다” 정도의 소극적 의미가 아니라 “...창문이 못질당했었다”는 의미는 아주 적극적인 의미인 것입니다. 그저 “비공개로 진행했다”라고 하지 않고 “창문을 못질했다”라고 하고 있는데 왜 그대로 번역하지 않는 것입니다. 2)창문을 못질해 버렸다는 표현 속에는 여러 뉘앙스가 있는 것입니다. 극비의 심사과정에서 너무 “고문”을 당한 나머지 기업이 그 주식시장 상장의 꿈이 좌절되었을 수도 있고 기업 측이 지나치게 불리한 조건을 강요당하여 그 기업공개 규모가 아주 형편없이 축소된 경우도 있을 것입니다. 3)두루뭉술한 “의역”은 원의를 전혀 왜곡할 수도 있고 (), 왜곡 정도는 아니라도 그 의미를 크게 희석할 수도 있는 것입니다. (dilute)


[정역]:여름이 지나면서 실리콘밸리의 많은 사람들 사이에서는 월스트리트의 시장들이 (거만한) 구글에게 때늦은 (오래 미뤄 온) 벌 (보복)을 할 것이라는 추측이 난무했다. 그리고 이런 비관적 견해를 가진 사람들의 생각에는 일리가 있었다. 즉, 지난 3년 반 동안 기술업체의 기업공개를 위한 창이 못질을 당한 경우가 많았다는 것이다. 그러나 어쨌든 기업공개 진행의 이정표로 간주되는 구글의 공식 상장 신청 서류 수정안이 늦게 나왔고, 구글이 독특한 경매 절차를 진행하기 위한 기술적인 부분에서 문제를 겪고 있다는 소문이 떠오르기 시작했다. 게다가 8월이 다가 오고 있었다. 이 8월 한 달은 월스트리트 사람들이 거의 휴가를 떠나 자리를 비우는 달인 것이다.


[corrections]::1)The noun word comeuppance, which appears on Sentence One of the paragraph at issue, is synonymous with punishment or retribution. There should be a doer and a victim in some punishment and of course it is described in the original but it is missing in the Korean version. Which constitutes a real problem above all the fuss surrounding the mistranslation or something.


2)Who punishes whom? Of course the Wall Street does Google. The phrase of "the markets" represents the Wall Street of course and the expression {{...would hand Google a long overdue comeuppance}} means that it would do Google one harm or the other through a deliberately protracted evaluation process.


3)Repetitious expressions are a major characteristic of the modern English prose. The numbered (by me) four sentences of the paragraph at issue consist of repetitions. By repetitions I don't mean a mere reiteration of same sentences. By the repetition I mean a restatement by a tiered and gradational development built on the foundation of the same or similar context.


4)The paragraph mentioned above talks over and over about difficulties facing Google in the course of going public. Animosities, generated in Wall Street and fomented by Google by its pompousness and arrogance against the institutional financial watchdog, is evident, so the translator should try his or her best to transmit emotions and actions played here by two conflicting parties.


5)It's been a disappointing experience to see in the translator a lack of a basic texture of knowledge that the expression containing the definite article 'the' is a convenient yet essential tool in an English exposition for a concise summary or substitution. In brief, the words "the naysayers" do not mean "dissenters to the established statement" but indicate the very people appearing in Sentence One who had been scared about the possibility of retribution from the Wall Street.


6)Connectives play an important role in supporting and developing statements in paragraphs. In this context, connective "and" of Sentence Two also helps clarify the meaning of "the naysayers." They do not mean "dissenters to the previous opinion" but the every people who had harbored doubts about the Google's future of going public.
