English Is a Colossal Cache of Synonyms!

[comments]::1)It gets me stupefied to see such a ludicrous version of "petrified." The translator has got it wrong. Utterly wrong in that he has misconstrued the statement {{Poor Dot is petrified,}}to mean to the effect that {{Poor Dot is exhausted.}}

2)You say exhausted when you are so tired that you can barely move or do anything further. Dot, who is a deposition witness, might be extremely tired, of course, but he is scared rather than physically fatigued here in this paragraph.

3)The English language, like the other languages of the civilized countries, is a colossal cache of synonyms. That's the reason a dictionary of synonyms, I think, should be an inseparable companion to both teachers and learners of the language. That's also the reason a knowledge of and sincere approach to English synonyms is a must.


4)The word 'petrified' is classified into the fear category, which is lexicographically synonymous with:panic-stricken, terrified, overcome with fear, scared to death, frozen with terror. Petrified is also synonymous with the word 'stiff' in the last sentence of the same paragraph. In brief, stiff is terrified to a less degree than petrified.
