To Talk His Way into Homes

[원문역]:오트는 그 말을 잘 받아들였다. 웃음까지 지으려고 했다. 이 사람은 한때 집집마다 문을 두드려 가난한 사람들에게 싸구려 보험을 팔며 생활을 했다. 운이 나쁜 사람임이 분명하기는 하지만 천성은 좋은 사람 같았고, 누구하고도 금방 친해질 수 있을 만한 사람이었다. (레인메이커, 시공사)


[의역 또 의역]:1)왜 “의역”을 합니까? 왜 걸핏하면 한국의 번역자들은 의역을 합니까? 사실, 여기의 경우는 의역도 아닙니다. 분명한 오역이죠. 왜 오역일까요? 저자는 그런 의미로 쓰지 않았기 때문입니다. 2)왜 번역자는 저자가 쓴 대로 번역하지 않나요? 우선은 저자가 쓴 대로 좀 곧이 곧 대로, 원문에 충실하게 옮겨 봐요. 그리고 독자들이 생각할 여유도 좀 남겨놓구요. 독자가 생각할 부분까지 건드리고 나서 그걸 “번역”이라고 하면 안 되죠.


[the type who could talk his way into homes.]:“집주인을 설득해서 집안으로 들어갈 수 있는 그런 사람”이라고 적혀 있잖아요. 그러면 그렇게 우선 옮겨 봐요. 그게 번역이에요.


[to talk his way into homes]:1)행위 동작 (to talk)+과정 (his way)+결과 (into homes)가 이 표현 속에 있어요. 2)"집주인을 말로 설득해서 집안으로 들어가는 데 성공하다“가 이 표현의 의미죠. 2)보험대리인 (insurance agent)이 하는 일이 뭔가요? 우선 보험모집을 하려면 보험계약자와 상담을 해야 하고 가정 방문의 경우 집안으로 들어가서 대화를 해야 하죠. 그런데, 대개의 경우는 문전에서 쫓겨나요. 그렇게 쫓겨나지 않고 집주인을 안심시켜서 집안으로 들어가야 상담을 할 수 있겠죠. 3)이 부분이 나타내는 표현은 오로지 이것인데도{{누구하고도 금방 친해질 수 있을 만한 사람이었다.}}운운 엉뚱한 말을 하고 있어요. 누구의 성격을 말하는 장면이 아니죠.


[정역]:그는 내 말을 선의로 받아들인다. 그러면서 미소를 띠려고 애쓴다. 이 사람은 한때 집집마다 문을 두드리며 가난한 사람들에게 싸구려 보험을 팔아 생활을 했던 사람이다. 운이 나쁜 사람인 것은 분명하지만 속마음은 착한 사람이라 누구라도 그의 말을 들으면 쉽게 문을 열어주어 집안으로 들일 수 있는 그런 사람이다.

[comments]::1)What do you think is the major obligation of a translator? Don't you think it's imperative for you to function as a mirror which reflects the original as it is? But most of the Korean translators color here, paint there, and twist so often. Too much of a good translation, indeed.


2)The translator has got the original statement wrong. Essentially wrong in that he has misconstrued the expression {{the type who could talk his way into homes}}to mean to the effect that "he is the type of a man who can easily become friends with any people." That's been too obscure and neutral an interpretation.


3)The Korean version is a little too far from what the author has had to say to his readers. In other words, the Korean translator should not have taken the part by context. He should have made a verbatim account of the original script.


4)What does he do for a living? He collects insurance policies. Protagonist Bobby Ott is a an insurance agent. So, the top on the priority list, that is, his main interest is have an opportunity to talk to his potential customers, win them over and get them signed up.


5)The obvious process is too difficult a job. Not a piece of cake. Problem is that proprietors are not liable to open the door. They usually throw a suspicious glance through a slit and get it slammed before a first syllable is uttered from a visitor. Therefore, talking to home owners and getting them to open the door for the visitor means that his job is half done.
